Candle Walker

I was laying in my room one night. It was stormy and I couldn’t sleep. The power was out so I could use the computer. I decided to get up and go find something to do. I grabbed the emergency candle from my drawer. I grabbed a lighter from under my bed. I flicked it a few times to no avail. It was out of fluid. I sighed, then reached for my box of matches. Only about six or seven in the box. I grabbed one. I struck it hard against the side of the box. Small sparks flew off the end as it caught fire. I stared at the small insignificant flame for a minute. Finally I lit my candle. It was a dim light that barely even let me see a few feet from my bed. I slid out of bed and picked up the candle. I used the dim, insignificant light to find the door. I felt a chill as I grabbed the doorknob. I had the strange feeling I was being watched. I pulled the door slowly, searching for anything on the other side. Nothing but darkness. I walked through the dark house. The darkness seemed to be darker than usual and seemed to be thick. Almost like I could grab it. I went to the kitchen and tried to make some food. There wasn’t much of anything, so I gave up. I just ate some dry ramen noodles. Walking back to my room I had the feeling again that I was being watched. I felt like something knew I was here and was watching me, stalking me. Waiting for its next move. I shrugged off the feeling and went back to my room. I decided I would get into the shower just to waste some time. I went to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. I couldn’t see much because my candle was dim and the mirror was a little musty. I saw something move out of the corner of my eye in the mirror. A grey, tattered old cloak. It seemed to be flowing. I turned around and my candle flickered, then went out. Nothing there I guess.

I searched for my matches, it took a second but I finally found them. They seemed damp for some reason. I blew on it to dry it a little. I struck it hard against the box. Just sparks. I struck it again, and a third time. Sparks. I grabbed another match. This one I struck with more intensity. Sparks, then a small flame. A flame of life, that I had created. I relit the candle and walked back to the bathroom. I turned on the shower and stepped into the steamy warmth. I stood there for a second taking in the warmth, then the candle flickered out again. I was getting frustrated now, this candle was starting to annoy me. I stood there just absorbing the warmth and I was about to get out for another match. Then I heard it, a small faint breeze. The breeze seemed different, ominous and dark. It carried a faint whisper almost. I could hear it, nearly in audible. “Beware…. Beware….” I strained to hear the muffled words. Had I imagined them? They seemed so distant, so unclear. I took no heed to the whisper. I imagined it, I’m sure. I stepped out of the shower. Walking into my room for the matches, I shivered, I felt the creepy feeling of being watched.  I struck the damp match  and lit the candle again.

I looked around for my battery powered lantern, for a more permanent light source. No where to be found. I walked all through the house, no lantern. The entire time I walked through my small house I felt as if being watched and stalked. I felt a menacing presence. I could quite tell what I felt though. It was weird. I searched my house again for any kind if light. I was rounding a corner and I saw the grey fabric again. Darting into my bedroom, at least I thought I saw it. I walked into my bedroom, empty, I think. I searched around with the dim light. I saw no signs of anything or anyone being here but me. Still I felt like I was being watched. I slowly panned around the room with my dim candle one last time. Still not seeing anything. I laid back in my bed and stated at the ceiling. I couldn’t sleep feeling like I was being watched. I grabbed the candle to blow it out, then I saw that cloak. I could only see a little bit of it, but it wasn’t moving. I moved the candle towards it. Slowly coming into view I saw a creature.

It was tall, about a mans height. It had pale, white skin. It’s long arms hung till its slender, bony fingers drug the ground. It had no mouth or nose. And it’s eyes, the horrible eyes, dark abysses of black that reflected my candle light. Blood started to run from its eyes. Gushy and flowing in large rivers of red. I was petrified, I couldn’t move. The creature just stood and stated at me. I fell from my bed and I reached under. Searching for anything to fend off the creature if it moved. I grasped what fell like a handle.  I pulled it out to get a better view, it was a flashlight. How did it get there? I thought. I flicked it on. The large beam shot up to the ceiling. As I moved the candle back and the flashlight forward, the creature disappeared. How? How could it do that? I turned off the flashlight and put the candle back up. The creature reappeared. I think it only appears in candle light. The creature slowly lifted its long arm. It curled its long fingers to point behind me to a wall. In the wall it had scratched out words. “Beware! Beware! It is coming!” I decided to take no heed to these either. I figured if it was writing this stuff out then the entity wanted me to be afraid so it could kill me. I wasn’t going to let that happen. I curled up under my covers and blew my candle out and slept quickly hoping this was all just a dream.

I awoke the next morning to a beautiful sunrise. No creature in my room, or writing on my wall. I smiled and got up and I went to work. All day I felt as if I was being watched or followed or something. I couldn’t shake this feeling. I finally got home and the feeling increased again. My power was back on now. I sat and watched tv for a while before taking a shower. At bed I felt cold, shivers and watched. I couldn’t sleep or do anything. I experimented by taking my candle out and lighting it. I looked around my dark room. Nothing, so far at least. I looked in the final corner and saw the entity standing there. It seemed to fade in and out in the edge of my light. It scratched at my wall, carving words. “Beware it is coming. I can help.” I wasn’t going to listen to this malevolent entity. I was not going to let it kill me. I curled up again and slept.

This went on for about three weeks. Night after night the entity there only in my candle light. Scratching messages. Eventually I couldn’t take it anymore. I was going insane. The entity scared the hell out of me and I hated it. I knew it was trying to kill me. I just wanted it to leave me alone. I screamed and tore at my hair, trying to forget. I wanted it to leave and finally give me peace.

The next night, it was gone. Happiness overwhelmed me as I realized it was gone. I slept peacefully that night. At about three I awoke again. The house was shaking and there was a sort of red light filling the room. I slowly crept into my living room and there stood a gigantic, red, grotesque creature. It looked demonic with yellow gnashing teeth. It had long, black claws and giant horns. It’s eyes seemed to be made of pure fire. It charged me and I ran to my bedroom. I slammed the door and tried to hold it shut. My light was on, but a candle flickered in the corner. I turned off my light and there the entity stood over the candle. Scratching it’s message. “You should have listened. I could have saved you.” The demon burst through the door, burying its claws deep into my stomach. I lay there and screamed in agony as it began ripping me to pieces. Then I watched as the entity fade to black, leaving one last message. Candle Walker. As I lost consciousness, in a pool of my own blood, demon over me laughing its evil, horrid laugh. I died.
