Favoritism

This all may sound fake or not real, I still have trouble believing it. Ever since I was a child, an item has always been burned into my memory, a figurine. My mother had tons of them, but one stood out in particular, a little glass bear. It was my mother’s favorite, it was dressed in a little Halloween costume consisting of a pumpkin on it’s head and a cloak. My mother had strict rules with it. Do not touch, do not move, and never, ever take it off it’s stand. Of course me being a child at the time, I had to be babysat. So my mom hired a local babysitter and left me with her. We had been playing and it was near nap time, so she laid down and fell asleep. That’s when curiosity hit, why doesn’t mom let me near that bear? So I went to the bear and picked it up off the stand. Instantly it felt like my hands had been jabbed by needles and I dropped it. It shattered when it hit the floor. When that happened I heard a whisper, “Broken, broken.” It said. I got scared then, not from when my mom was coming home and would see it, but from the whisper. The babysitter was still asleep. I picked up the pieces and put them in the trashcan. My mother got home and didn’t even notice it was missing. I went to my room thinking she would see it later and then I would be in a ton of trouble, but that never happened. What did though, was much, much worse. That night, I was visited. I don’t know what it was, but it resembled the bear. It spoke to me, its voice was like a drawn out hiss. ” Broken, confess, replace. Broken, confess, replace.” Over and over and over. It was repeated multiple times. It visited me for a week afterwards repeated the same it said for hours upon hours. Then it stopped. Everything was fine for a few days. Then on my tenth birthday, my friend was hit by a truck on in the car on his way to my house. They said they found a strange item at the scene. A little glass figurine. With a pumpkin head and a cloak. After that I had to tell my mom, but yet still it continued. Even to this day it still continues. It’s as if it never ends. I just want it to end. There’s not much longer. Some may say I’m insane, but I’m as sane as it gets. There’s a gun in the drawer. I will miss everyone I know. Goodbye.

  1. So did the friend die or not? You never said.

  2. You explained nothing. Why were people dying? Why were there figurines at the scenes of death? What did the bear creature mean?

This story was too vague to be scary.

  4. Well that was a rushed ending. We didn’t get to know the characters at all and why is the bear haunting him. Further more, why did he have to die? I mean you’d assume he would do the right thing and put an end to this. Had some potential but was completely underplayed.

    • It also works for the comment above yours. It’s like it’s trying to communicate but doesn’t want anyone to know what it’s saying.

  7. Is it called ‘Favoritism’ because the mother favors this particular figurine? If so, what relevance does it have to the story?
