I know what you’re all thinking, I got some game system and it was haunted by some game spirit and the guy gave it away for free or some dumbass cliché like that, but you’re wrong. The story I’m about to tell you is about the hell that I was put through not just by one game not just by some spirit trying to kill me, but a man who betrayed me and sent me into their world into THEIR hell. He sent me into that digital world and now I’m trapped. So, I guess that if you’re willing to believe me this far, it’s time for you to read on, so that I can tell you the whole story of what really happened to me.
It all started about a week ago, I had finally gotten a job, I was working as a CIT, or counselor in training for a summer camp, and I was actually doing pretty well. I had done two sessions of the job, and I had finally gotten a day off. Even though I enjoyed what I did, I was tired. Anyway, I was biking home when I saw an old man. He was sitting alone on a park bench, deep in thought, it seemed important, so I decided not to bother him, but as I passed by he looked at me, and his face lit up as he stood.
“You there!” He pointed to me, and I stopped.”Yes you! Could you help me?” He asked and so I shrugged, agreeing. His smile grew wider and he told me to follow him. I nodded and followed him, slightly hesitant. I kept a hand in my pocket where I had a knife hidden. He led me down the street and towards a cellar. He opened it and walked through, leaving it open for me. Even more hesitant this time, I followed him down when suddenly; I felt a sharp pain in my side, and a warm feeling spreading down my body. I looked down and found that he had stabbed me. “I’m sorry boy, but you are the only other one compatible.” I had no time to respond when I fell on my back, my blood pooling around me. My vision faded out as I took my last breaths. The last thing I heard were the sounds of men, picking me up and the old man saying; “You have to move quickly, he’s no use to us if his brain is dead too.” That’s when I remember dying.
And that’s how it all began.
Suddenly, I woke up, and that’s when I got the feeling. I needed to run, get out of where I was fast. I looked at myself seeing needles poking into me. I tore them out, running out of the sterile white lab. I raced as fast as I could to get out of there and dodged behind a corner, hearing someone yell.
“The experiment has escaped, find him now!” I quickly got back up and began running once more, hearing footsteps behind me as they chased me down the corridors of the lab. I saw stairs and ran up those, continuing ascent up the entire building when I slammed through a door, finding myself on the roof. The men chasing me followed me out, and backed me into a corner. They had guns all aimed right at me. I looked over the side seeing how high I was. Under me was a black and green grid pattern. I wasn’t sure what was happening but I needed to escape. I jumped off the side, landing in the grid and falling into almost another world. I landed bending into the impact. I looked around. The world around me was destroyed, apocalyptic in appearance. I looked up but the men that had begun chasing me weren’t there. I sighed and began walking. I started to notice the bodies of numerous people laying on the ground, their guts having been strewn about. I saw one of them holding a pistol and picked it up. I took the holster too, strapping it on.
As I continued walking, I suddenly heard a noise behind me and looked back to see a giant lumbering creature, blood staining its teeth and claws, coming straight for me when I heard it say something.
“Glitch…” It groaned and charged. I turned and ran for my life once more, vaulting over destroyed cars and smashing through road blocks. I saw a large crevice and picked up my speed, sprinting, jumping at the last second. I missed the other side, but grabbed onto the rock on my way down, slowly climbing back up. When I made it to the top, I looked back, seeing the creature gone. I sighed and got up jogging lightly. At one point I ducked a corner, and as soon as I did, I ran into something. I fell on my back as the girl in front of me did the same. I got up rubbing my head and helped her get up too. She grunted in frustration.
“What the hell was that for?” She asked irritated. I tried to explain but she didn’t seem to care. “God, I’ve been in here for a year, and the first guy I meet just runs into me like this, I mean, who the hell are you anyway?” She asked, and so I responded.
“My name is Jack, Jack Nightshade.” She nodded, and I held out a hand that she shook.
“I’m Amelia, part of an experiment that has to do with this place.” She said, looking away and this caught in my mind and I asked about what happened. She explained it and I explained that I was part of the same experiment. At this she got excited. “Then… then you could help me escape. Oh this is so wonderful!” She yelled joyously. I looked at her questioningly.
“What do you mean escape?” I asked and she looked back at me.
“You mean you don’t know?” She asked me, and I shook my head. “Okay, I’ll give you the jist of it. So basically what they’ve done to you is transferred your conscious mind into a video game world that they call The Web. What it is, is a series of games such as InFAMOUS, and pokemon.” I laughed. Heck this sounded more like vacation, but she stopped me. “This isn’t a joke, okay? They’ve done things to these games, turned them into hell. You’ve heard of creepypastas right?” She asked and I nodded, “Well welcome to the place where they’re born, and there’s only one way out, the Mainframe.”
“So why don’t you just go there and get out?” I ask, and she chuckled annoyed.
“Really, do you think it’s that easy? I’ve tried, time and time again, but I get stuck. There’s just one game in the way, it’s the only way through to the Mainframe okay? I’ve almost died trying to get in.” She told me.
“Well, what game is it?” I asked and she sighed.
“It’s Silent Hill.” I shrug and roll my eyes.
“So what, just run through and get to the Mainframe, it can’t be that hard.” And now she began yelling at me.
“I’ve been stuck here for a year Jack, a fucking YEAR!” It’s not simple, it never has been simple. These games try their hardest to kill you, but you, you’re the only way that it could be possible to get out.”
“And why is that? If you can’t get out of here in a year, what makes you think I’ll be able to do any better than you?” I asked her, and she sighed.
“It’s hard to explain, that’s a story for another time. For now, let’s just say that you’re… different. You and I were compatible for testing because we are both different. There’s a reason you found that gun, it’s because in the back of your mind, you knew that you needed it, so you got it.” I looked confused.
“So what are you saying, I can influence what happens in here?” I asked, and she nodded, shrugging.
“To a certain extent.” She said and I nodded
“Well, I say that we should get out of here.” She nodded, and lead through the buildings.
Soon after starting we found ourselves in front of a glowing blue rip in the air. Static flowed around it, and as we stepped into it, we were teleported into the middle of a tall tower, water slowly filling in below us. I remembered this place, from a boss battle in a game I had played. “This Is Wind Waker.” I said. Amelia nodded and looked to a rising spiral platform.
“Common, we need to get to the top.” She said and began running. I followed her up. As we reached the top we saw the main character, dressed in green, stained in blood. I looked slightly horrified, but remembering it.
“I read this one. This isn’t Wind Waker, it’s Kill Waker.” I said, and she nodded slowly. I growled and reached for my gun to find it wasn’t there.
“Oh, something I forgot to mention, you can’t take weapons from game to game.” I rolled my eyes at her as I saw link coming closer to us, pulling out the kill waker, he raised it high, as everything went black. Suddenly, I felt a spark and color returned. My hands were stained red, crackling black electricity which seemed to disturb the textures of the world around it. In front of me was the kill waker, cracked in half, and Link, dead on the ground. The world began to shake around us, falling apart. Amelia looked around as different tears began opening. Quickly we chose one, running through it. We were in a town now, It appeared to be Lavender Town. I looked to her.
“Okay, you said that I had powers, but you never mentioned that. What the hell happened back there? Why am I able to do that kind of thing?” I asked. She sighed.
“Okay, just listen, this can get complicated. Our world, Earth, isn’t actually real. It’s virtual, kind of like the Matrix, but not. It’s almost completely different. We’re just all minds stuck in a computer program without true bodies. Now, the reason you’re able to do what you did, and were compatible with their experiment was because you’re what they classify as a ‘glitch.’ In other words, you’re not part of Earth’s original code, and neither was I, that’s why I’m here, and that’s why I’ve survived so long. I have powers like that to. Now, what you did back there was called ‘hacking’ or using your abilities as a glitch to rewrite the program of the game to give yourself weapons or abilities.” She finished but I had a few questions but I decided to leave them unanswered when I saw a dark figure walk into town. He looked like a pokemon trainer, but he looked almost haunted. He walked past us and brushed against me. He took a few steps before turning to look at me and Amelia. He pointed a finger at me and pulled a pokeball, throwing it out, a ghost appearing out. I instantly recognized this.
“Creepy Black Version.” I said to myself under my breath and got ready. Amelia stood back, and called to me.
“Now, Jack, to hack, you have to let your mind relax a little.” And so I did, “Then you have to focus.” So then I did that too, and the black static appeared again on my arms. The ghost attacked, casting the famous “Curse” spell on me. I saw a bright flash of light as a blade flew at me I tried to run out of its way, but it only followed me. I turned and blasted it, slowing it down enough for me to grab it. I turned and threw the blade back, it striking the trained through his heart, blood spraying out over the ground as he crumpled. Part of me couldn’t help but feel sorry those people I had killed, but then again, they had killed too. I looked to the ghost who smiled deviously before fading away.
“You will pay for killing too Jack, just as everyone else has.” It said, as it finally was destroyed. Again, the world began to fall apart, and another series of portals opened. Amelia lead me through another one of the portals, this one leading to destroyed wasteland, littered with graves. The portal closed behind us and I looked to Amelia who was crying. When I asked her what was wrong she told me that this was all of the glitches that had been sent here before. She explained that the experiment was really just a way to get rid of glitches to try and “protect” Earth. I she told me that every time she found herself her, her hope seem to fade even more. She hugged me and I hugged her back. I looked at all the graves and realized that the people who did this to us to the glitches, they were no worse than the characters in the games that were here.
“When we get out of here, we are go to kill those fuckers.” I said and she smiled. “Common, let’s get out of here and get to that Mainframe.” I told her and she nodded, leading the way. Soon we entered another world, this one also having fallen to pieces, just as the last one had. I remembered this as being Torvus Bog from Metroid Prime 2. There on the ground were dozens of dead bodies. I hacked the game activating my powers again, just in case. These people that were lying on the ground, limbs torn off. I did my best to try to ignore them, but the smell was making me gag. Amelia held my hand, looking into my eyes.
“You okay Jack?” She asked sincerely, and I nodded, but she could tell that I was holding something back. “Jack, what aren’t you telling me.” I sighed, sitting down, leaning against a crashed ship.
“When I was growing up, I was alone for as long as I remember, I grew up in an orphanage, had no friends, except one. A boy named Adam, he was my best friend, but one day we were out in the forest, having a good time, playing a game of capture the flags when I heard him scream. When I got to him, someone had broken his leg, and slit his throat, and his heart was cut out.” Tears were in my eyes as I recalled the memory. She wiped away the tears and helped me up.
“I know how you feel; I’ve witnessed all of my friends die. It’s like hell, but we have to keep going okay, we can’t stop.” I nodded and we continued to see a hellish demon appear, it was yellow with red eyes. “I looked to Amelia.
“Okay, I’m pretty sure Yellow Demon was a Megaman creepypasta.” She nodded.
“Yeah, they crossed it over though, so we’ll have to deal with it.” She said. I turned and faced the demon. It had a sickening grin, white fangs that shined at me as it opened its maw.
“You will die here glitch.” It said to me, and I huffed resiliently.
“You can say that, hasn’t happened yet though.” I said and clenched my fists. It swiped its large clawed hands at me. I ducked buck, but it caught my chest, slicing through my skin. I grunted, but slid under it, getting back up. A static whip formed in my hands and I spun striking the demon in the back. It roared and charged, pinning me down. It reared up to finish me when a bright white light, knocked it from me, severely damaging it. I looked to Amelia, her hands glowing white with energy.
“Quickly Jack, finish him off!” She said, and I stood, a gun forming in my hand. I aimed and began firing, never missing. I hit it square in both eyes, and in the throat, then in the chest five times, before the gun disappeared. It was time to move on to the next game, and so Amelia and I began walking, finding the final portal, this one glowed black and white, above it read Silent Hill. “This is why I could never get out, because I needed a glitch with black powers like you, you’ve been the only one I’ve ever seen.” She smiled, “Let’s do this shall we?” She asked and I nodded, as we opened the path and walked through for our final challenge…
We entered Silent Hill and the door closed behind us to reveal the large creature I had encountered when I had first entered the world, along with the guards that had chased me. We both knew what to do and turned, running as we were chased, bullets flying past, some barely missing. I activated my powers and jumped over a car, blasting it into the guards. I hit a few, but the others slid under it. We continued running, turning a corner into an ally. The creature was too big, unable to follow us, but the guards were close on our tails. I formed a pistol and fired, killing a few more before running again. I felt a pain in my arm as I ran, and I knew I had been shot, but I kept going, exiting the ally. We looked to our right to see the creature there and went left instantly. Using my powers I lifted a manhole and jumped down, Amelia following. Again, the guards followed us. The smell was horrible, nauseating, but I pushed myself on. There were only three guards left and I saw Amelia stop, firing a blast of her energy at them, killing them all. I sighed sitting down to catch my breath when she saw my wound. “Jack, you’re shot.” She said, and I nodded.
“Yeah, I’ve had worse though.” I said, tearing off a piece of my sleeve and tying it around the wound. I stood up “Common, let’s get out of here.” I told her when suddenly everything was pitch black. She raised her hand, giving us light as the world fell into ruin around us. Concrete had fallen from the walls and the ground was slippery, covered in bodies of other glitches, each torn apart. We sighed and found a ladder, climbing out.
The world outside was no better than that in the sewers. Paint was pealing from the buildings and wood panels were torn off. We continued on, seeing a faint light in the distance. We tried to follow it as best we could when we heard a hollow voice behind us.
“Go to sleep…” It said and we spun around to see a man, his face a pale white, a psychotic smile joining him. I recognized him as Jeff the Killer. But we were getting tired, losing the energy to fight, so we did the only thing we could, we continued to run, heading for the light in the distance. Amelia grabbed my hand, pushing me to go faster, and so I did. We were getting close when suddenly the large creature jumped down in front of us blocking our path. We made a run, sliding under it to get through the rip, but it followed us.
What we found though, was an infinite darkness with a pillar of light. We were standing on a platform with the beast, our final battle before escaping. Amelia and I activated our powers. The beast was large, almost twice our size, doglike in nature, but its eyes were empty sockets blood poured from its mouth, and stained its fur. It had some sort of exoskeleton for armor that covered most of its body, and it had two large tails with spines at the end of them, dripping with venom. The whole thing seemed like a huge cliché. It was time to battle though and cliché or not, this thing was going down.
The beast charged at us, but we rolled out of the way. I summoned a sword and jumped, slicing at it, but it knocked me back, almost off the platform, but I stayed on, getting back up. Amelia, summoned a gun, firing, but the bullets bounced harmlessly of the exoskeleton. The beast swiped one if its paws at her, but she flipped out of its way. I kept a grip on the sword, sliding under it, managing to hit its leg. It stumbled back, turning to me, whipping its tails at me, I jumped up and grabbed one of them. It swung the tail, trying to shake me off, but I held on tightly, slicing off the unguarded tail at the base, falling flat on my back as I hit the ground. It tried to stomp on me, but Amelia created an energy platform above me, stopping the creature. I rolled out and stood next to her, twirling the sword in my hand. It jumped and lashed out, hitting Amelia square in the chest, also slicing her arm with one of its clawed paws. I lunged forward, stabbing its paw, pinning it into the ground. Amelia ran up, a sword forming in her hand as she jumped up onto the creatures back, plunging her sword through the beasts throat, blood spraying onto the ground as it fell, dead. We got up, our blades disappearing as the beast did too, and a set of platforms appeared, we ran up them, but they just lead to a ring of platforms, in the center a large phantom-like creature that resembled the man who had done this to us.
“You…” I said angrily. “You do this to us you send us in here to let us die and then you have the nerve to face us like this. You’re a coward, and… and…” He cut me off.
“And what exactly? You two are nothing but glitches, you were not even supposed to exist, and so therefore, you must be destroyed, just like every other last glitch in the world. Making it this far for both of you amazes us, but just because you are a glitch of which uses dark powers, the only glitch to be known to have this ability, doesn’t make you any more of a threat, or any less, so again, you and your little friend must be destroyed. I cannot allow you to escape.” As he said this, the light began to fade slowly behind him until it was nothing but a small tear. “You cannot leave, you will die, and I shall be the one to do it.” He said and suddenly, he grew large demonic wings, his eyes turned a blood red, and his hands grew large white claws. Amelia and I turned to each other.
“We can do this.” She said, “I know that we can, I’ve seen what you can do, and together, our powers will rip him apart.” I smiled and nodded, but just before we split up on the ring, she gave me a kiss on the cheek. “For good luck.” She said with a grin and continued.
We were now on opposite sides of him. He raised his hands into the air, a ball of energy forming, sending two rays of darkness down on us, closing in, and cornering us. At the last second, Amelia and I jumped of the platform, swinging behind the rays and each sending a blast of energy into his chest. He reeled back, but recovered quickly, slamming a fist into the platform, shaking it violently. I nearly fell off balance, but kept my footing. I ran around his back while Amelia distracted him from the front. I hit him in the back of the head with another blast of energy, Amelia doing the same in the same spot when he turned to me. He was getting angry now, but I could see him weakening. It looked like all we would need is a powerful attack to a vital part of his body, the forehead would do. We ran each other and I told her the plan. She nodded as he turned to us, slamming both his hands down, smashing that part of the platform. Again, he raised his hands high into the air dark energy forming, and the rays shot out again. We ran together, interlocking hands and focusing our powers, forcing them to mix. One ray shot from both our hands, hitting him square in the forehead. He yelled out in pain, slowly fading away. The ground began shaking and we ran up to the rip. It was big enough for one person to go through. I looked to Amelia.
“Go.” I told her, but she shook her head.
“No, Jack, I’m not leaving you behind in a place like this.” She said, but I forced her closer.
“Amelia, I can’t keep you in here, now that rip will lead you out. I can take care of myself, now GO!” I yelled, but she just shook her head again.
“No, Jack, I’ve been alone all my life and then you showed up, and you were the only one that I could possibly keep as a friend who won’t die.” I sighed and nodded.
“ Okay, head back to the other portal then, I’ve got something to do quickly.” She nodded and ran back. I formed a piece of paper and used my powers to quickly write all this down. I’m sending this from the world that we’re stuck in now, and to all the other glitches out there, watch your backs, and don’t trust anyone. I may be stuck in hell, but at least it’s with someone I care about and love, you might not be so lucky.
We will escape.
