I don’t know why it stood out in the shop. Maybe it was a sign…Maybe I was just looking for an excuse to waste my money or maybe it was something else. But either way, the small book looked a mess. Nearly all the pages were ripped out or scribbled on so I couldn’t read it, the leather cover was fading and starting to fall off and the silver print was nearly gone, I’m pretty sure it said “Diary.”. But I bought it besides all that. I took it home and done all my chores, you know. Just the normal boring stuff. It was in bed, around four in the morning when I couldn’t sleep that I picked it up and read it. I should of stopped then. I didn’t.
” 17th, March, 1913.
Diary, I think daddy has gone insane. He is back from Germany, a quick visit, he says. But there’s something off about him. His skin is tinted purple. His eyes are wilder. Jumps at the slightest sound. Mommy says it isn’t his fault. Tommy is saying daddy had such nerve to return. Tommy told me last night that they preformed operations on him….Bad ones. He said it with such passion and venom I didn’t say anything. I’ve got to go now, daddy wants me for something.”
The next few pages were stained with blood…. I read the next page I could read, the handwriting was different.
“Little missy thinking she could say my secrets in this filthy little book. Well, I aint throwin the book ‘way. ‘Stead I’m just going to leave a nice little warning. You have read this, you know half of the truth. You will die.”
I thought nothing of it, I fell asleep after awhile.
I awoke to the sounds of muttering, squinting against the light I saw the outline of a man, he reminded me of the dad described in the diary. He took slow steps towards me. Lifting up a hammer, stained with blood, he gave me a twisted smile. I screamed. Praying it would wake everyone up. It didn’t. He banged the hammer to my temple with such force it killed me. I can still see him over my body. Hitting that hammer against different parts. He took the diary and left, making a mark in it with my blood. A small one that mingled with the other blood…..
