Has anyone ever heard of Sam's Show? I'd be damned if anyone did, it was a public access show that played in my area where this guy named Sam, would do stupid things for the camera such as: the cinnamon challenge, chubby bunny, the big red challenge. Eventually, it started to become very odd. The guy who ran the show, put up a black tarp for the background and he would do masochistic things such as put glass on his tongue, he once took a lighter and burnt his name in his arms. No matter what Fox did to take him off air, he'd always find a loophole to get back on. Some episodes he would be wearing a costume and he would act out the character that he portrayed such as a gorilla. I was twelve when his show was on the air, I eventually got too scared to watch his show and I never heard of it for the rest of my childhood.
In my last year of college, I was taking a journalism class and one of the last assignments we had to do was an article about something in our childhood. The first thing that popped into my head was "Sam's Show" so I wrote the article and I excluded the things that made me look batshit insane.
The next morning, I got a big package in the mail, it had a return address on it and everything on it, but written in sharpie was "The things you never saw." The curiosity got the better of me and I opened it up. It was all VCR tapes, I popped one of them in and I saw that cheesy low-fi intro of Sam's show except half way through the intro it cut to black. Sam had his face in the camera growling softly. He took a small pocket knife and started tearing into the black tarp. The whole time he made that irritating growl. And then, it was over. I became fascinated in the things I was seeing. I quickly popped in one after another, all of basically the same thing. It was starting to get late and I only had ten tapes left. I decided to save some for tomorrow and went to bed.
That night I kept having a dream that was similar to the first tape I watched except Sam talked. A lot of it was incoherent dream talk. I woke up with the uncontrollable urge to watch more tapes. So I popped one in and started watching. This time there was no intro, the tarp was already destroyed and Sam was just sitting in a folding lawn chair. He picked up a pack of tacks and started sticking them in his fingers, he showed no emotion as he did it too. He mumbled “This is what happens when Fox takes me off.” several times and then the tape ended. I hopped onto my computer and looked up “Sam's Show” and it was already searched in the search history.
So I clicked on of the searches and it lead me to a site that looked like a really crappy attempt at HTML. Everything was distorted and then a video started playing. It had Sam with red and blue face paint on. He put a handgun to his temple and shot himself. I screamed and shut off my computer. I turned my computer back on and the wallpaper was the low-fi background from the show. I tried to change it but every time I changed it back it would change back to the background. I had enough, I threw the tapes out and I never saw them again.
