Vince Evans jumped in the passenger seat of the fire engine. He had been at his job for 6 weeks now, after he was honourably discharged with PTSD when nearly all of his squad were killed in front of him. Nick Williams was driving, and Evan Phillips was in the back seat. Vince yawned. It was 3 am, and he had been called to extinguish a small fire on river brook Lane Park. “So, who called us? Why would anyone be in the park this early?” he asked evan. “not sure, apparently they didn’t say.” “Any word on casualties? Anyone injured?”
“No, this guy really skipped any details.” Vince looked out the window, feeling sorry for the poor sods who were woken up by the siren. “Here we are.” Said Nick. They saw a small park keeper shed completely engulfed in flame. Vince ran out and inspected the fire. “Evan, help me set up the hose. Nick, connect us to the water supply.” “On it, Vin.” He ran off into darkness. Soon, Vincent and Evan had extinguished the fire, but Nick still hadn’t returned. Vince contacted him on his radio. “Nick, where the hell are you? Nick, fires out.” All he got was static. “Evan, I’ll look for him. Stay here.” He left. He followed the hose until he reached a part where it had been cut. “Nick!” he shouted. Then he saw a drop of blood a few feet away.
Vince ran to the drop of blood, and was horrified. It was definitely blood. He looked up, and saw a trail of blood leading away from him. “Nick!” he shouted. He followed the trail of blood, until he heard a noise behind him. He turned, and saw shrub move. “Hey, Nick?” he shouted. “Hey, the fires out.” Then a voice from behind him said “it’s only just started.” Vince turned, and saw a man behind him. He was bald, white, and in his early 30s.his right arm was just a bone, sharpened to a spike. “Who the hell are you?” “I am the firebrand. And I will have my revenge.” Then he stabbed Vince through his glasses, into his left eye.
Evan was getting worried. “Guys?” Then someone floored him. The man stabbed Evan in his left shoulder. “Arr!” Evan pulled out his fire axe, and swung it at him. The man ran off into the distance. Evan got out his radio. “This is Evan, I have been stabbed, and I need medical assistance. I have no idea where Nick and Vince are.” Robert Macready replied. “Hi, Evan, I’ll call for an ambulance. What happened?” “This guy came out of nowhere and stabbed me. Jeff and Vince have been missing for a few minutes.” “Shit… I’ll tell them to hurry the hell up. Rob out.” Evan crawled up to the fire engine’s door, the fire axe in his hand. “So the trap has been set.” Evan looked at the origin of the noise. The firebrand jumped at him, knocking the radio out of his hand, and wedging his axe into the side of his arm. “What the fuck do you want?!” shouted Evan. “Revenge.” And with that, the firebrand pressed his hand into Evans forehead. Evan started to scream in pain. He was burning. Then his entire body burned into flames. “YOU’LL NEVER WIN! WE WILL STOP YOU!” Shouted Evan. “Oh no. I think you will find you have helped me.” Evan heard the sirens approach, and he knew that he had done exactly as the firebrand wanted. He would kill his rescuers.
20 years ago, Liam smith was woken up by his brother, Richard. “Wake up!” shouted Richard. “What?” replied Liam grumpily. “The house is on fire, we have to move!” he screamed. “Oh shit!” Liam jumped up. They both ran towards the back door, Liam leading, when part of the roof fell on Liam. He was knocked unconscious.
Liam woke in hospital. He couldn’t move his Right hand at all. “Hey!” he called out; hoping one of the nurses would hear him. “Yes?” said doctor McKellar. “Is my family Ok?” He asked. “I’m very sorry,” she said, as Liam already knew what she was going to say. “Your parents didn’t make it. Richard was DOA. I’m so sorry.” Liam broke down into tears.
Over the next 2 months, Liam was stuck in hospital, and he had to have his Right hand removed as it was infected. The police gave up on their investigation after 6 weeks. While Liam was stuck in hospital, he realized who was to blame for everything. The fire brigade had failed to extinguish the fire in time, the Doctors had failed to save his family, and the police had given up on finding who murdered his family.
The next morning, McKellar’s house was found burned down. When the emergency services arrived, there was only one survivor out of the 4 inhabitants of the house; 6 month old Steven McKellar.
Author’s note: I’ve managed to end this on a shameless sequel hook*, involving Steve as one of the Cops sent to save Evan, but this story still stands on its own merits, and introducing a second cast of characters just felt like it was needlessly dragging the story on to infinity, so I’ll put that in part two in the unlikely chance this becomes popular enough. And if anyone is confused about Vince’s needless back-story about his time in the army, read “hunting grounds”. Yes, a shameless plug-in for my previous story.
*sequel hook hand door car door. I could not resist making that joke. Actually, that sounds like a good category for pastas that end on a blatant sequel hook.
