When I was a kid my Dad introduced me to a game called The Sims. It quickly became my favorite game to play. I would come home from school and sit on the computer and play for hours at a time. I was fascinated by it. I would make whole families and raise them as if they were my own children. Of course I had absolutely no patience to wait until my Sims gained enough money to buy all of the things I wanted for my house, so I would cheat. I would enter the cheat “rosebud” about 50 times and poof, my Sims would have a huge amount of Simoleons (Money) I would buy the mansion and fill every room with pointless things, hot tubs, flat screen TV’s, video games, etc. It was a blast, one of the best times I’d ever had as a kid.
One day I came home from school, ate something, and hopped on the computer. I opened The Sims and started playing. Everything was normal; my Sims were swimming in the pool, watching TV, making something to eat, nothing too exciting. Then I noticed a Sim that I hadn’t made was in my house. I assumed he was one of the neighbors that just came over to hang out. He looked different than the other Sims. He was bald, wore a black suit and was slightly taller than everyone else.
He was standing in one of the Sim’s bedrooms. He wasn’t interacting with any of the other Sims, he was just standing there. None of the other Sims seemed to even notice him. He was starting to creep me out so I tried to click on him so I could tell one of the Sims to ask him to leave. But for some odd reason I couldn’t click on him. The pointer didn’t even turn into the little hand when I hovered my mouse over him. It was like he wasn’t even there. I found this very strange, but it wasn’t enough to freak me out too much.
I attempted to ignore this bizarre Sim and kept playing the game as if nothing happened. Eventually one of my Sims travelled upstairs and tried to go into the room that the weird Sim was in. He grabbed the door knob and tried to pull the door open, but the door wouldn’t budge. The Sim stood there for a moment looking confused and finally walked away. I had been playing for at least an hour and a half and the Sim hadn’t moved a muscle.
At this point I was getting fed up with the Sim being in my house so I looked up a cheat on how to delete a person and attempted to use it on the strange Sim. Nothing happened when I entered the cheat. One thing did happen though. The green diamond above the Sim’s head started to turn red. Usually when the diamond above a Sim’s head turns red it means that your Sim is in serious trouble and could possibly die if you don’t help them out. It continued to turn red until it was glowing with a bloodshot red color.
I was starting to get a little freaked out now. I decided I would be done for the day and continue to play tomorrow and hopefully the strange Sim wouldn’t be there. I opened the menu and clicked the exit button. Nothing happened. I clicked it again. Nothing. “What the hell?” I thought to myself. Suddenly, a thought bubble appeared above the Sim’s head. It showed what looked like all of my Sims lying on the ground outside. They weren’t moving, but their eyes were wide open. Wider than usual. Then the thought bubble panned out and it showed the bald Sim in the suit standing above my Sims looking down on them. At this point I was pretty damn scared. I was considering just leaving the room, but at the same time I wanted to see what would happen next.
The thought bubble vanished and so did the red diamond above the Sim’s head. All of a sudden the Sim’s head started slowly moving upward until it’s eyes were locked with mine. It stood there for a moment staring at me and I sat there staring at it, paralyzed with fear. Then, without warning, my computer screen went black. My whole computer had crashed. I ran out of the room and told my Dad what had happened. Of course, he thought my imagination was just running wild and that I had just been playing on the computer for too long. After that day I never played The Sims again. The game was ruined for me and I was terrified of it. I kind of still am.
