They say there is a stairway that takes you down to hell itself in Clarinda. This is the story of one man who got up the courage and went down there; he came back a different man though.

Everyone’s talking about that stairway; I want to see this myself. Tomorrow I will show everyone that the stories heard about it are false and that it is safe to go down there. I need to get my supplies together if I plan on doing it on such short notice. I will need a lantern, some matches, food, water, and a sack to carry all of this.
I am going to need plenty of rest in order to be able to make it down and up the stairway; I am going to hit the hay now.

Everyone gathered round as I started my decent into ‘Hell’. I have been walking for around 30 minutes or so, my legs are tired, my stomach is growling, and I am thirsty. I made camp in a little room I found while making my journey down, it’s nice and cozy in here.
A noise woke me up, a deep rumbling noise and it scared the hell out of me, and it’s time to continue my journey. It turns out I was asleep for about 20 minutes, its good the noise woke me up because they say if you sleep during the night time down here, you do not wake up. It is getting cold now so I know I am underground. Torches are set up along the wall like somebody expected people to go down this stairway. It is time to sit down and rest my legs and my hands from all this writing.

TURN AROUND AND NEVER LOOK BACK!
August 21st 1925
It has been so long since I have been down here and I am starting to lose it, I am seeing things, hearing things and the strangest of all, it seems to be getting warmer the farther down I go. Some pages were ripped out of my journal, I do not know what was written on them but, they were ripped out in a very vicious manner, oh well. I can no longer sleep without being woken up by the shrill laughter that occurs every minute I am down here and it lasts forever, maybe this was the stairway to hell, maybe I was wrong and everyone else was right, we would find out soon.
August 30th 1925
I swear to god I can hear the devil himself speaking to me all the time now, it is so warm that I have to continue with no jacket on. Sweat is making my hair stick to my forehead which is throbbing from all the voices in my head, the damn voices won’t go away. They repeat the same thing over and over in my head ‘Turn around and never look back’.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LISTENED!
September 1st 1925
I have had too much of this, I am turning around and running up those stairs without looking back, I saw the devil himself and he told me to turn around and never look back or else my innards would be added to the collection of his favorite victims. I keep running and running and the stairs do not seem to end. It is getting colder now so I know I am getting closer to the town.

You were my favorite one John, why did you have to go so soon, you will pay for this.
September 5th 1925
I am finally back to the town and everyone noticed something different about me, I guess it is the fact that I have not bathed for weeks, no that cannot be it, is it my clothes? No, it’s my eyes, my eyes are different.
September 10th 1925
Today is the big day; I cannot wait to see the look on everybody’s face as I am ripping their throats out and cutting them into little pieces. This will be so exciting, I am so glad I went down that stairway now. I look in the mirror one last time before I go to do the father Satan’s deed. I am happy with what I see, I see Satan himself and I smile as I walk away from my mirror with my machete in my hand.
The journal of John Lugar was found in his home on the day of September 11th 1925 with blood smeared on the final page it said a simple phrase, the phrase was ‘I will join you soon father’ and it had a pentagram drawn to the right of it. Every person in Clarinda was murdered the night of September 10th 1925.
